We used the color to both set the time seasonally for the play but also the mood. The whole play was framed as a child dreaming and we had the "winter" portion of it, and the later portion which we wanted to feel like "spring" as the child grew and warmth returned to his life. Culminating in Hermione coming back to life and the families reuniting. It was important for us to have a distinct feeling between the acts dark, cold and detached, and then the warmth of new life and hope of spring.
